The Word of God is completely sufficient revelation for every spiritual need (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:2-4, 19-21). Paul urged Timothy to do this: “Preach the Word … ” (2 Timothy 4:2). (Berkeley). “FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE UPON THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL” (1 Peter 3:12). Rather it is based on what God has said in His Word. The leading incidents in his apostolic life are well known: his walking on the troubled waters to meet Jesus, but sinking through doubting ( Matthew 14:30 the divine person and office of Jesus ( Matthew 16:16 ; Mark 8:29 ; John 11:27 notwithstanding the difficulties in the way of such belief, whence he was then also designated as the stone, or rock ( Matthew 16:18 but his rebuke of his Lord when announcing what was so unpalatable to carnal prejudices, Christ's coming passion and death ( Matthew 16:22 his passing from one extreme to the opposite, in reference to Christ's offer to wash his feet ( John 13:8 John 13:9 that he would never forsake his Lord, whatever others might do ( Matthew 26:33 curses ( Matthew 26:75 and prophecy of his faithfulness unto death, after he had received from him a profession of "love" as often repeated as his previous denial ( John 21:15-17 zealous, pious, and ardently attached to the Lord, but at the same time impulsive in feeling, rather than calmly and continuously steadfast. Saints are those whose sins are forgiven but whose sins are not yet eradicated (see Romans 7). Love draws a church together in unity even in the toughest of times: 14 And beyond all these things [put on] love, which is the perfect bond of unity (Colossians 3:14). Preachers do not need to “add” anything either; they should only faithfully proclaim what God has revealed and what He has given us through His Spirit to understand and apply (1 Corinthians 2). Grumbling resents our opportunity to serve and sacrifice for the sake of our Lord and the benefit of our fellow-believers. How easy for a woman to help a young mother care for her newborn baby. Barnabas seems to have the gift of encouragement (see Acts 4:36), but he must also have possessed the gift of teaching and/or prophecy (see Acts 13:1). STYLE.--Fervor and practical truth, rather than logical reasoning, are the characteristics, of this Epistle, as they were of its energetic, warm-hearted writer. If our gift is in the area of speaking (and this means much more than preaching), we must be sure to speak the truth of His Word in a way that communicates the authority of the Word. (NIV), If any of you is a preacher then he should preach his message as from God. Compare the notes at 2 Timothy 4:8. 2 You lust and do not have; [so] you commit murder. I took a seminary student along with me, and because we were both wearing suits, the family greeted us eagerly. So LACTANTIUS [Of the Manner in Which the Persecutors Died, 2]. But no mention elsewhere in Scripture is made of this Egyptian Babylon, but only of the Chaldean one. It was not I who had authority, but the Word of God has authority. 5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. 2 And He answered and said to them, “Do you not see all these things? When Moses spoke his final words, he warned the Israelites not to become preoccupied with the mysteries which were not revealed, but to become students of what God had revealed to them in His Law: “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29). Hence he is called "first" in enumerating the apostles. ‘ 37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You drink? Love is the best antidote for sin. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him. This is because spiritual gifts have little value apart from love. Peter also recognizes that prophetic revelation is difficult to understand and easy to distort (2 Peter 3:14-18). As Paul, "the apostle of the uncircumcision," wrote Epistles to Galatia, Ephesus, and Colosse, and to Philemon at Colosse, making the Gentile Christians the persons prominently addressed, and the Jewish Christians subordinately so; so, vice versa, Peter, "the apostle of the circumcision," addressed the same churches, the Jewish Christians in them primarily, and the Gentile Christians also, secondarily. 8 But since we are of [the] day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned, [as it were,] with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to each person (Colossians 4:2-6). Often, this is because we have ceased to be sober and sane, especially in relationship to the end of all things: 1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Spiritual gifts can be neglected (1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6), and they can also be prostituted (2 Peter 2:15-16). IRENÆUS [Against Heresies, 4.9.2] expressly … The desired goal is not just the meeting of a need but the praise and glory of God. Crescens, his companion, went there about the time of Paul's last imprisonment, just before his martyrdom. Thus, when imprisoned and tried before the Sanhedrim for preaching Christ, he boldly avowed his determination to continue to do so. But there also is a negative side to Peter’s words. . 8 But all these things are [merely] the beginning of birth pangs. The story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) is but one example. Pontus was the country of the Christian Jew Aquila. This gives us a very important clue to the meaning of the expression, “love covers a multitude of sins.” Love does not seek to “cover up” sin but to cover it. Peter’s words indicate that Christian service is not natural but supernatural. (4) Peter’s words must be understood by giving heed to the term “end” and the expression “all things.” The word “end” refers to the goal or the outcome of a sequence of events or elements. I prefer the view previously stated. They spent the summer in our home with many good times shared together, and the memories we have of this family are warm ones. 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? All rights reserved. Because Peter saw both suffering and glory in the life of Jesus, he can speak with the authority of an eyewitness. It also gives us a sense of urgency that the time for the preaching of the gospel and the salvation of the lost is short (see 2 Corinthians 4:16–5:21). By following clues provided by the grammar of the original text, we would classify the different gifts named in this way: In both gifts (speaking or serving), Peter’s exhortation is given in a positive way. Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i... More, 4. The coming of our Lord includes the vindication of the righteous and the condemnation of the wicked—the outworking of justice on earth. So TERTULLIAN [Against Marcion, 4.5, and The Prescription Against Heretics, 36, 38]. Peter now gives us the reason love must be a matter of the highest priority: “love covers a multitude of sins.” This is not a new principle. Therefore [it] says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE” 7 Submit therefore to God. The woman was a relative of people who attended their church, and they were not sure of her spiritual condition. Peter then would naturally write to confirm the doctrines of grace and tacitly show there was no difference between his teaching and Paul's. Always there is an urgency to the gospel, for one’s response to the gospel determines one’s eternal destiny. Some things are seen by Peter as yet future (see 2 Peter 3:3). Peter is a man whom we would have expected to write a book on prophecy. Spiritual service is serving in the name of Christ. A Christian might not be welcome except in the home of another saint. This “outcome” is the consummation of “all things.” In other words, Peter is speaking of the consummation of all of God’s plans, purposes, and prophecies. In 1 Peter 4:6, Peter speaks of the saints who are “judged in the flesh as men,” but who “live in the spirit according to the will of God.” Whether this judgment is by unbelieving opponents (as Stephen was condemned to death) or whether it is the “judgment” of physical death all men suffer due to Adam’s sin (Romans 5:12-21), or both, it is judgment believers suffer in time. We must not be oblivious to the times in which we live; neither should we be frightened and act in panic. His familiarity with Paul's Epistles shown in the language accords with what we should expect from the fact of Paul's having "communicated the Gospel which he preached among the Gentiles" (as revealed specially to him) to Peter among others "of reputation" ( Galatians 2:2 answer of a good conscience toward God" ( 1 Peter 3:21 of God" (Greek), 1 Peter 2:19 "living hope" ( 1 Peter 1:3 and that fadeth not away" ( 1 Peter 1:4 ( 1 Peter 5:14 than as at present exalted and hereafter to be manifested in all His majesty.
